She called us on a Tuesday. Her mother, 84, widowed, sharp as ever, still living in the 2,800 sq ft Lake County home she and her husband bought in 1981, had finally agreed to move into a CCRC apartment thirty minutes away. The unit had opened unexpectedly. The community needed a deposit and a move-in date within a week.
The daughter lived in New Jersey, had two kids in college, ran a small business, and had not been able to take a full week off in five years. Her brother, also out-of-state, was supportive but unavailable. Her mother had told three different siblings three different things about what she wanted to take with her. Nothing had been packed. The garage had not been opened in over a decade.
We did the on-site walkthrough Wednesday. Sent the written scope and estimate Thursday morning. Started downsizing sessions Friday. Over the next nineteen days we sorted the entire home with her mother present (and leading, by week two), coordinated an estate sale for the dining room set, shipped two boxes of heirlooms to grandchildren in California, oversaw moving day with the CCRC's intake team, and did same-day setup at the new apartment.
On move-in night, her mother called her daughter from the new apartment. The daughter later told us it was the first phone call from her mother in two years that did not include the words "I don't know what I'm doing." She flew down the following weekend, not to unpack, but to have lunch.
